Evangeline tightened her arm around the other woman. She might not have been as smart as Kaeshira, or as experienced.. But she was damned intuitive. And right now, the Bosmer was making her heart ache, if only because she wasn’t totally sure how to help her. “Tell me,” Evangeline encouraged gently. ”I’ve put so many of my worries on your shoulders. It’s about time you put some of yours on mine.”
“There’s somethin’ wrong wit’ ‘is heart. He told me.” Kaeshira leaned against her, sniffling a bit. “He’s tryin’ t’ figure out how t’ fix it, but…”
Eva put her hand gently into Kaeshira’s hair and stroked gently. With a sigh, she rested her head against the other woman’s, as if by doing so they could think of something together, that some brilliant plan might hatch. Unfortunately, nothing happened. Evangeline couldn’t say she was surprised. ”Your Vadril,” She was careful and certain to make that clear, ”Is a smart mer. From what little you’ve told me he’s brilliant, even. Determined to a fault.” She wasn’t sure where she was going with this. For once, she didn’t know what to say, or how to offer comfort.
She pressed a kiss to the top of Kaeshira’s head. ”…Tell me what I can do.”
“There’s nothin’ to do.” She just sat there, shaking. “I can’t e’en do anythin’, an’ I’m his best friend. He’s smart, ye’h. But tha’s the probl’m. He’s wastin’ all ‘is time lookin’ for a cure an’ not livin’ and he doe’nt have much time left to begin with. I-I jus’ want t’ spend time wit’ ‘im before he dies— ‘An…” Kaeshira paused for a moment and tried to think of how to exactly word what she was feeling. Instead, she broke down and sobbed, burying her face into her hands. “I don’t want ‘is last mem’ries in life t’ be of bein’ alone. I wanna be there.”
